To prevent the serious damage caused by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), it is important to avoid drinking alcohol during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Fetal alcohol syndrome is...
When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the alcohol passes through the placenta into the fetus's bloodstream, and the fetus, whose ability to metabolize alcohol is underdeveloped, is more susceptible to the effects than the mother, which can lead to serious disorders. Also, if a woman drinks alcohol while breastfeeding, the alcohol will be present in her breast milk, and she will pass it on to her baby.
This serious condition that can occur in fetuses and infants due to maternal alcohol consumption is called "fetal alcohol syndrome." This condition is 100% preventable by simply avoiding alcohol consumption.
*Avoid drinking alcohol when you are thinking about getting pregnant.
*If you were taking it before you realized you were pregnant, stop taking it from then on.
The rate of alcohol consumption among women in Japan is rapidly increasing, but at the same time, not much is known about the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, so caution is needed.
